U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called on all of us to recognize that addiction is a chronic illness, not a moral failing. First Congregational Church of La Grange offers this list of resources to support individuals and families affected by mental health problems or substance use disorder.

Substance use disorder and mental health disorders affect millions of Americans. Our community is no different from the rest of the country in this regard. If you are seeking help for yourself or someone you know, resources are available:

State of Illinois Opioid and Drug Treatment Helpline – 1-833-2FINDHELP (1-833-234-6343) or Text “Help” to 833234

The helpline, which is available 24 hours a day, will put a caller in touch with a trained screener who will search for state-licensed options near the caller’s neighborhood or hometown. Options will take into account the type of treatment being sought, location of the caller, and insurance, if available.

DuPage Crisis Intervention Unit 1-630-627-1700

  • The Crisis Intervention Unit is a mental health support system that deals with mental health emergencies such as suicidal thoughts, homicidal threats, and symptoms of serious mental illnesses, including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorder. Individuals in need can contact the Crisis Intervention Unit at any time and set up a phone or in-person interview. It is available 24/7.

CARES (Crisis and Referral Entry Services) Crisis Line 1-800-345-9049 (Voice) 1-773-523-4504 (TTY)

  • CARES is a telephone response service that handles mental health crisis calls for children and youth in Illinois. A parent/guardian may check to see if their child can receive Screening, Assessment and Support (SASS) services by calling the CARES Crisis Line. SASS is a crisis mental health service program for children and adolescents who are experiencing a psychiatric emergency. SASS agencies provide intensive mental health services for eligible children and youth who may need hospitalization or community based mental health care. SASS services are available by calling the CARES line.

  • The Oak Park Drop-in center (open Mon-Friday from 1-7pm and Sat/Sun from 2-6pm) is for adults 18 and over who are experiencing an increase in mental health symptoms. This peer-run alternative to the emergency department provides mental health support and has NAMI and Pillars staff available. Free; no insurance required.
